Friday, September 29th, 2006

Yes, Brian Baker took the money again. Very nice!

We made $140 for 826Valencia last Wednesday. Good work! Plus couple more people now know that it exisist.

GR was right behind Brian, and Big Red did well too. Yup.

Again — good times! Thanks to all who attended!

Lotsa love,

Big Red.

ManCations

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Interesting article about hotels that are starting to offer package vacation deals for a “buddies weekend” including such things as race-car driving, fishing, skeet shooting and, of course, cognac and cigars.

A few of the packages listed tread a little too close to metrosexuality for comfort, including a “ManScaping” weekend where you and your amigos get your back, chest and shoulders waxed. While that sounds about as much fun as getting the boys together for a good dental flossing and finger-nail clipping party I’ll withhold judgments. Or will I????

Puff’n'holdem IV — it’s time we got together..

Monday, September 25th, 2006

..for another poker night. for another poker night. Yes, Puff’n'holdem is back! On Puff’n'sip day of September 27th, we will be holding our 4th session!

Just a reminder:

Start time 6:51 PM.

Texas Hold’em. $20 to seat at the table.

All procceeds go to a good cause (see below). Puff’n'holdem, that’s all of you, has raised $1,000 this year to help variuos charitable organizations in Bay Area. Good job! And, you don’t have to play to contribute to the cause — please give.

This time around, it’s 826 Valencia:

826 Valencia is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently in his or her individual voice.

Come out and play!

Lotsa love,

Big Red.

Binging Costs Brits Billions

Friday, September 15th, 2006

Hot off the BBC wire is shocking news that folks in Britain like to drink to much! An estimated 20 Billion pounds (where do you find that weird “L” type symbol on your keyboard?) are spent on alcohol related issues a year. With the socialized health-care they have one person’s drunkenness hurts everyone, I guess.

Binge drinking is defined as “drinking more than 10 units of alcohol in a single session for men, and 7 units for women.” A unit of alcohol is defined, in true British fashion, as “half a pint of beer or a small glass of wine.”

Now I always find definitions of binge drinking to be both naive and a little unsettling…they should also bring out a competitive streak if you’re a puff ‘n sipper. However it should also be noted that a true puff ‘n sipper practices moderation in all things…we are social animals after all and anything taken to excess, be it puffing or sipping, will make you decidedly less than good company. So remember to slip in a sip of water between mojitos and enjoy the fresh air between pulls on your Partagas. Good? Now head to the bar and get the next round.

Colorado in Puff related news

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Apparently our mile-high, beer brewing neighbors to the East are having some difficulties with cigar/smoking related laws. This first blurb is about a cigar bar in Durango, CO that could face a whopping $200 fine if found guilty of not really qualifying as a cigar bar.

The second short article is about a coalition of bar owners suing the state over the new no smoking laws. The only thing worth noting here is that the coalition is named “Coalition for Equal Rights”…something Colorado’s not been too fond of in the past. Good luck, fella’s.

America’s Drunkest Cities

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

Forbes goes lowbrow and ranks some of America’s cities with their patented drunk-o-meter test. Apparently there are some questions about their methodology, but scientific validity aside, San Francisco/Oakland area ranks #20. Milwaukee is #1 and Las Vegas is #16. I find this unacceptable.

You know what this means, don’t you? We’re not working hard enough. Double your efforts, dear Puff ‘n Sippers, double your drinks, and triple the good times. There’s still hope for us.

SF.MyOpenBar.com

Friday, September 1st, 2006

Though not a frequent poster (perhaps unauthorized?!) I felt it would be remiss to not tell you, gentle puff ‘n sippers, about this website: sf.myopenbar.com

It is a lovely collection of events that will serve either free booze, or very cheap booze. Something we can all get behind in this, the land of the 6 dollar beer.
